ZIA (SUN SYMBOL)
The zia is a zuni religious symbol. It’s meaning is varied, depending on the storyteller. The basic meaning of the symbol follows: starting at the top or twelve o’clock position, the first four lines represent, from left to right—the four directions (north, east, south, west); the next four lines from top to bottom—the four scared plants (sweetgrass, tobacco, sagebrush, cedar); next, the four seasons (winter, spring, summer, autumn); last, the four stages of life (birth / elder, childhood, adolescent, adult). Other variations include, the four—colors, times of day, scared animals, minerals, and elements. |
